This is pretty incredible; apparently rapper Lil' Jon has just signed a huge deal with Universal Republic Records to produce what looks like a shit load of stuff... A lot of what they wrote about him in this article was news to me.
NEW YORK, Oct 08, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Universal Republic Records has signed Grammy Award winning recording artist, rapper, producer, mogul and all-around hip hop Renaissance man, Lil Jon, it was announced today by Monte Lipman, President and CEO of Universal Republic Records.
Lil Jon, who has even founded a much talked about vineyard, Little Jonathan Winery, burst on to the hip hop scene more than a decade ago as the indomitable 'King of Crunk.' The charismatic star will not only deliver records via his own label at Universal Republic - his first album due out in the first half of 2009 - but the multi-talented Atlanta entrepreneur will don several unique hats at his new home, thanks to a multi-faceted deal crafted by Lipman that includes a label imprint, a recording agreement, a production arm, a digital presence, and a pivotal A&R consultant role at the company.

You really have to question the gap that has been created throughout the years between rap and underground hip-hop when Lil' Wayne is the one winning "Lyricist of the Year" Award. Given that is was BET, but still, I can think of a dozen rappers that deserve this award more that Lil' Wayne. Here is an article from www.sixshot.com:
Lil Wayne walked away from the 2008 BET Awards yesterday (October 18) with three awards including the 'Lyricist of the Year' Award. According to MTV, the superstar rapper also won 'MVP of the Year' and the Alltel Wireless 'People's Champ 'Award._ During one of his acceptance speeches, the rapper announced that he is expecting a son. _I got a son dropping any day, pray for me._ Lil Wayne said. The 2008 BET Awards took place at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center and will be aired on the network on Tuesday night (October 23).

We at F-Rock Clothing have been huge fans of hip-hop artists like Talib Kweli and Mos Def. We feel they have done an amazing job at portraying hip-hop in an intelligent manner and also that they are just good artists in general. Talib recently released his latest album, "Eardrum" with satisfactory reviews. We enjoyed the album, and if you are a big fan or Talib or Mos Def, you will likely like this latest work too, however, it does lack a single that truly defines the album overall. Here is a review from Rolling Stones online:
"Talib kweli earns the respect he gets. He's got plenty of brains and enough flow, and though his attempts to make conscious rap commercial inspire purist sniping, he's balanced the two with integrity and grace. But four solo albums in, it can't be an accident that he's done his signature work with collaborators _ Mos Def (Black Star), Hi-Tek (Reflection Eternal) and many, many cameos (try the z "My Favorite Mutiny"). The man simply lacks spark. Kweli's Warner debut features yet more cameos -- Kanye! Norah Jones! UGK! _ and many, many producers. Though it's admirably consistent and pretty darn OK, it lacks a knockout track to counterbalance the complaints about the King James Bible and swine toothpaste. Closest is one to his kids, with Musiq Soulchild adding music and soul, child. Just after, "Listen!!!" establishes its right to bang on your title orifice. But then there's Justin Timberlake's bonus cut. JT -- eschew philosophy! You sing, therefore you are."
