Freestyle Session 11 is just around the corner and we are as excited as ever. FSS has come a long way since it's inception a decade ago, and can now arguably be called the biggest and most influential jam in the world.

Last year, the 10th anniversary offered a controversial win for Zulu Kingz against a very on point Gambler's crew. Many b-boys were very angry at the decision and blamed the erroneous decision on politics. This year promises to be just as big as the 10th year anniversary, and whatever comes from it one thing is for sure, FSS11 is not to be missed.

Nothing makes us more happy than seeing the prevalence of hip-hop amongst far reaching corners of American culture. It almost makes one wonder how much of a better place this world would be if everyone stopped fighting and just started rapping. With that said, here is one of many youtube remixes that we hope will encourage this action.

Continuing with our hip-hop remixes, we discovered a very rare video of crew in the 60s dancing to Walk It Out, proving that hip hop was not created in the 70s, but a decade earlier.

Family Guy has been one of our favorite shows for a while. Mix that with Kelis's Milkshake and then remix it again and you've got this clip:

Be sure to support our scene and check out "Inside the Circle," here is a full description and preview: INSIDE THE CIRCLE: A B-Boy Chronicle tells the story of two strikingly talented Texas b-boys, Josh “Milky” Ayers and Omar Davila, former best friends who become rivals when they join competing dance crews. Immersed in the b-boy culture of defiant creativity, Omar rises to international renown while Josh tangles repeatedly with the law. Both of them struggle to keep dance at the center of their lives and the “B-Boy City” competitive events thrown by visionary street dancer Romeo Navarro serve as emotional milestones in their journey to adulthood. As Romeo aptly observes: “If you can hold yourself down in battle, you can hold yourself down in life.”

Freestyle Session 11th Year Anniversary: This year's Freestyle Session was everything a b-boy/b-girl could hope for. There were massive amounts of cyphers and call out battles, crazy competition, and fun performances by some of the world's best dancers. Congratulations to Natural Flave for taking the event.

The Venue: This year's venue was quite the spot. Circus Hollywood included about 3 different rooms, 2 for breaking and 1 for popping and locking. Altogether it worked very well for the competition, but was not on the same level as fss 10.

The Performances: Jabawokeez, Storm Solo for Two, Salah's Glumby, Jalen vs. Lil' Demon, and Supercrew all graced the stage this year. First off, Supercrew performed in what was a disappointing show after they decided to only do solos. Storm's Solo for Two was incredible; a combination of choreo and video, it showed the creativity of a living legend times 2. Salah's Glumby was also amazing, and showcased the diverse array of talents of Salah including a very strange voice. Jalen vs. Lil Demon was one of our highlights from the comp, both kids were aggressive, highly skilled, and extremely fun to watch. And then of course there was the Jabawokeez, who did not disappoint. Their show was top of the line and simply mesmerizing.

The Battles: This years battles proved to be quite surprising with many of the favorites being knocked out in early rounds. Skill Methods had a disappointing day after being eliminated by Xitama-Japan in the round of 16. Next Massive Monkees lost to long time rivals Natural Flave (Flex Flave and Supernaturals) in the quarter finals. And finally both Zulu Kings and Killifornia were eliminated in the semi final rounds in what was a very surprising turn of events. All in all, the battles were something to be desired, and definitely not as hype or amazing as FSS 10. Here are the final results of the top 16 brackets, courtesy of bboyworld.com:

What an amazing event! We arrived to the Shoreline Amphitheater at around 1pm. By that time some of the smaller acts had gone. I’m disappointed that we missed Murs who had a van outside with the slogan “murs for president” on it, that guy is crazy. On the inside of the gates it was a regular music festival with various booths for food, tee-shirts, art, music, ect. One booth on the way out that I wish I would have stopped at was the one for free stuff related to your health at a concert, i.e. ear plugs, water, bandages.

The first act we saw when we got there was a good one, Immortal Technique. His set was good with some of the classics from his Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. He was very inspiring between his “fuck the government, cops, and your dad” rants. He also did some stuff off of his new cd the 3rd World, which I had to go buy after his portion. You got to support the independent artists. He did mention that he is personally going over to Afghanistan to over see the orphanage that he is funding.

The next act was Raekwon and Ghostface Killah, who were good and brought some good energy. Rakim on the other hand is a legend but just doesn’t bring it. He is more of a poet reciting his rhymes to the audience. Redman and Methodman were my favorite acts of the night just because they turned the event into a party and brought so much energy. They were jumping into the crowd, throwing water on the front row and crowd surfing.

Mos Def was in the same category with Rakim in that he didn’t bring any energy to the stage. He did some of his singing but really all I wanted to here was the stuff off his first 2 cds. De la Soul actually had a solid performance taking us through their very large catalog of cds. Nas was good and performed a lot of his Illmatic stuff and also a couple tracks off his untitled album. He is definitely becoming more political and I think that it suits him as a conscious mc. The Pharcyde was decent but mostly because I haven’t listened to a lot of their music.

Another highlight was Supernatural who was a filler between acts. He brought people up to the front and had people pass him objects and he would incorporate them into his freestyle. It was great. He also did his impersonations of different rappers.

The last show of the night was A Tribe Called Quest aka the Q-Tip show. All the members did show up but it was basically his show. It was good, they brought a lot of energy and did deserve to be that last act.

Over all I was very impressed with the whole show. The acts were on schedule and did their 30min set and got off the stage. For a hip hop show that is amazing. Also the quality of hip hop that was gathered in one place was incredible. The event ran very smoothly and no one had a problem with each other, people were just having a good time. We need more events like this. The only downside is that I didn’t have any sunscreen and got a pretty good burn with a straight farmers tan.
